A Legacy of Contemporary Fine Jewelry

From Karl Lee Big Sur to Big Sur Goldsmiths

Established on the rugged coast of Big Sur, California, in 1964, Karl Lee Big Sur represented a timeless tradition of fine handmade jewelry. Founded by Karl Lee (1945–2013), the studio’s origins trace back to the iconic “Art Barn” at the Esalen Institute. Karl’s innovative designs, known for their harmonious blend of sterling silver and 22-karat gold, set the standard for wearable, everyday luxury. His creations were not just about adornment but about embodying a connection to nature and spirituality, rooted deeply in the ethos of Big Sur.

Today, the legacy lives on through Karl’s son, Ali Lee, and daughter-in-law, Carrie Armstrong. After Karl’s passing in 2013, the studio embraced the name “Big Sur Goldsmiths” to honor the collaborative work of the family. This name reflects the collective artistry of Karl, Ali, and Carrie, and the rich heritage of craftsmanship they continue to uphold.

The studio, now a thriving family affair, has expanded its creative horizons while maintaining the meticulous craftsmanship and high-quality materials that define the Karl Lee Collection. Each piece of jewelry, whether a classic Karl Lee design or a fresh creation by Ali and Carrie, reflects a deep respect for exquisite gemstones, fine metals, and skilled artistry. Our jewelry is designed to be more than just an accessory; it is a piece of art meant to be worn daily, becoming a part of your life’s journey and a cherished heirloom for future generations.

In the spirit of Big Sur, our pieces are crafted for real life. Whether you’re exploring the great outdoors or attending a special occasion, our jewelry is made to accompany you every step of the way. Discover the enduring beauty and unique artistry of Big Sur Goldsmiths. A contemporary legacy.
